FEEL YOU is a celebration of individuality and style with artists, creatives, and activists from around the world. We continue the series with Cooper Terry.

Through his choreography, Cooper pushes the art of contemporary dance and movement to new limits. Driven by love and authenticity, he is inspired to create by the extraordinary wisdom, human compassion, and creative exploration of the collaborators, dancers, students and everyday people that surround him. They inspire him to move past the ordinary, dive deep into himself, and create something spectacular and truly ‘himself’ through dance.

Introduce yourself, tell us who you are and what you do?

My name is Cooper Terry. I am a 22-year-old dancer and choreographer based in Sydney, Australia.

FEEL YOU Cooper Terry

How do you FEEL when you create?

Creation, for me is such a visceral experience. As any artist will tell you, to be able to create something real you have to delve into some of the deepest parts of yourself. It can be many things and can evoke a range of emotions, however for me, creativity is always very cathartic.

Where do you draw your inspiration and what motivates you to do what you do?

A lot of my inspirations come from the energies around me. I am constantly surrounded by such deeply passionate people in many different areas of my life and am always learning new and exciting things from my family and friends, my colleagues, my students, and other creatives around the world. Outside of dance, my passions lie within fashion, design, visual arts and many other things and I’m always finding new ways to explore the relationship between those different avenues and how they can complement one another.

Everything I do in work and life is driven solely by authenticity and love. Self-exploration and self-expression along with connection to myself and to others motivates me to continue creating and continue experiencing different forms of art.

How are you FEELing these days?

Obviously, the arts industry, along with many others, have taken a massive hit due to COVID-19, but I am so incredibly inspired by the way artists all over the globe have adapted and come together with passion and innovation to continue sharing and experiencing art in such progressively modern ways.

What does your style say about you?

Obviously, the arts industry, along with many others, have taken a massive hit due to COVID-19, but I am so incredibly inspired by the way artists all over the globe have adapted and come together with passion and innovation to continue sharing and experiencing art in such progressively modern ways.

All of this absolutely reflects in my art as well. My style of choreography is constantly evolving and changing day to day and I love to task myself with taking old choreography and finding new pathways and stylistic choices within that.

Any words to live by?

A beautiful friend and mentor of mine, Linda Gamblin used to say, “Person first, artist second, dancer third.” Prioritising yourself, your mental, physical and spiritual health and allowing time for these things can breathe such life into your art and your work and allow you to lead your life with authenticity and open mindedness.

Describe a day in the life Cooper Terry

You really never know what you’re going to get during a day in the life of me haha! I’m very busy all year-round teaching dance classes and workshops at various different studios and events and I’m usually up and out to start my first classes by 9am, mainly teaching all the phenomenal performing arts courses at Brent Street Studios in Sydney. Outside of that I’m scheduling time to plan different looks and creative visions for new shoots and campaigns I might be working on or when there’s nothing in the works just planning looks for my next trip down to the grocery shops haha!

In my down time I absolutely thrive on a coastal walk around Sydney’s beautiful beaches with my friends and skin care and hair care are my go to self-love methods!

I find I create best at night time, so I usually save any choreography for the end of the day. Something about having completed my day just allows me to clear my mind and focus solely on the choreography at hand. I LOVE dancing in the dark! I have sustained many bruises from this creative habit haha but I find it helps me to minimise any self-doubt or judgement on my part and allows me to just let my creativity take control.

Which pair of UGG’s fits your style best

I love the classic mini’s and nuemel boots for their versatility, they’re so easy to style, but the Oh Yeah slides and the Zip sneakers have such a fun, unexpected flare that just works so well with my wardrobe!
